How To Easily Make Your Concrete Shine With A Pressure Washer

Business Blog

If you feel like your concrete is starting to look a little old and weathered, you don't need to replace it. More than likely, all you need to do is give your concrete patio a really good cleaning with a pressure washer.

Dirt & Your Concrete Patio

If your concrete patio is located somewhere where it gets a lot of shade, mold and/or algae may start to grow on your concrete. Mold and algae are able to grow on concrete due to concrete's porous nature.

If your concrete patio is really old, its surface may be more porous than a newly poured cement patio. Dirt can more easily stick to your cement patio when it is old; this is not a bad thing, it just means that you need to clean your patio off more often as it ages than when it was brand new.

Setting Up Your Pressure Washer

You don't need an incredibly strong pressure washer to clean you cement patio. You just need one that can pump about three gallons per minute and put out around 3,000 psi. Most small to medium sized pressure washers can handle the job of washing off your cement; you don't need a huge or industrial sized pressure washer for this job.

You don't want to degrade the surface of your cement or the material or objects surrounding your patio, which is why you should use a wide angled tip on your pressure washer. This will spread out the distribution of water as you clean, and will allow you to remove built up dirt, algae and mold from your patio without causing any damage to the surface of your patio either.

If you have a really large patio, you may want to consider purchasing or renting a rotating head attachment. A rotating head can clean your patio just as effectively as a wand with a wide-angled tip. The big difference between these two options is how these tools operate. When you use a wand with a tip, you have to hold the pressure washer above hip-level, which can get tiring and can wear you out if you don't have a lot of upper-body strength. On the other hand, a rotating head attachment works more like a vacuum; you can hold the handle at about waist level and just push the attachment along instead of holding it up like you would with a wand.

Washing Your Concrete Patio

You should clean off your patio using the same technique you use for washing windows; start at the top, and work your way from left to right, top to bottom. Try to work systemically, so you ensure that you clean your entire patio and so that you don't blow dirty water back onto the areas you have already cleaned.

If you have an older patio, you should clean it at the start of spring and at the end of summer. If you have a newer patio that is less porous, you may only need to clean it once a year. To purchase a pressure washer for this job, visit a site like http://www.benscleaner.com.
